You can choose the test type “Paper-based” or “Computer-delivered”. You need to go to the test centre to take the test.
The Test Report Form, content, timing and structure of the test is the same whether you take the test on paper or on computer and the Speaking test is always face-to-face with a certified IELTS Examiner.
The order of the test is different as below.
Paper-based IELTS: Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking
Computer-delivered IELTS: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
The computer-delivered testing will all be completed on the same day. With computer-delivered IELTS, test takers get headphones for the Listening test and they can receive their results in 3 to 5 days.
At the paper based IELTS test, we’ll give you a pencil and an answer sheet. You need to write your answers on the answer sheet before the time runs out.
With computer-delivered IELTS, you type your answers in the corresponding boxes on your screen. We’ll still give you a pencil or pen and paper to make notes – even if you do IELTS on computer.
Are you concerned about not typing fast enough? There’s no need to worry: the computer test is designed for people with normal typing skills. If you can write an email, you can do the computer-delivered test.

The duration of the Speaking component is between 11-14 minutes comprising of 3 parts. This is the only test which is conducted a face to face with a highly qualified examiner.
The Speaking section can be completed on the same day in test centres in Japan. Your test centre will advise.
The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.
