IELTS is one of the four English language proficiency tests that are attracting increasing attention in Japan, and is known for its high international validity as an English proficiency test for study abroad and immigration. The high quality of the test has been highly evaluated by universities in Japan, and it is now being used for AO and recommendation entrance examinations. For this reason, there is a growing demand from English teachers of high school and university students to learn how to teach IELTS effectively.

Teacher training workshop by an IELTS expert: Knowledge sharing and classroom activities to help students improve their IELTS test scores

Description:

You are invited to attend a two-part workshop aimed at teachers in Japan who would like to support their students in improving their IELTS test scores. The workshop is designed to not only help you understand the basics of the test but will also provide ready-to-use tools and activities to assist you in the classroom. Both Japanese and non-Japanese teachers of English language are invited to attend the workshop, thus providing an opportunity to collaborate and learn together in a multicultural environment.

The first workshop will be based on the Listening and Reading parts of the test. The trainer will guide you while you work on some activities that can be used in your courses and will also discuss the crucial elements to focus on in order to help improve your students’ reading and listening skills.

The second workshop looks at the Writing and Speaking sections of the test. The trainer will discuss the various aspects of writing essays, including structuring and organising, and the areas that should be given special attention. There will also be a discussion on the Speaking section of the test and activities that your students can do to improve their speaking skills.

Dan Golden has spent over 14 years helping candidates prepare for the IELTS test by improving their English skills and developing their confidence in their own abilities. He spent 12 years in a variety of teaching and administrative roles with IDP English in Bangkok, consistently challenging and motivating students to do their very best. He is equally comfortable working with high school and college students, university lecturers, government officials, military officers, and corporate leaders. In addition to his roles as a teacher and an IELTS examiner, Dan has led multiple successful IELTS teacher training seminars in the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Evaluating and Improving IELTS Writing and Speaking

Schedule:

  • 1st Session (Speaking): Thursday, February 18th, 2021 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. JST

  • 2nd Session (Writing) : Thursday, February 25th, 2021 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. JST

Description:

This workshop is designed to provide support to IELTS teachers/trainers interested in gaining more in-depth knowledge on the Speaking and Writing sections of the IELTS test. Teachers that are keen on helping their students raise their band scores – in addition to improving their speaking and writing skills – would receive targeted advice from a trusted IELTS trainer who has many years of experience in this field.

The first session on the Speaking section of IELTS will focus on:

  • Analyzing the Speaking band descriptors.

  • Evaluating pre-recorded Speaking tests using the test criteria.

  • Group discussions in Breakout rooms on estimated band scores recorded by the participants.

  • Trainer-led discussion on classroom strategies for improving the test takers’ IELTS band scores.

The second session on the Writing section of IELTS will focus on:

From Sentence to Essay – Helping students attain band score 5.5 in IELTS Writing Task 2

Date & Time: 8th October 2022; 3:00 to 5:30pm JST; 5:00 to 7:30 pm AEDT

Description: IDP IELTS is hosting an interactive webinar exclusively for school teachers in Japan aimed at teaching essential writing skills required to formulate comprehensive essays. The trainer will suggest ways to improve the basic world knowledge of the students while keeping pace with the prescribed classroom curriculum. The trainer will then show how to interpret an essay title and compile the arguments in logically laid out paragraphs which address all parts of an IELTS Writing Task 2 question. There will also be some focus on how the effective use of cohesive devices, referencing and substitution increase the overall cohesiveness of an IELTS essay.

Although this workshop is geared towards teaching relevant skills for the IELTS Writing test, the strategies discussed will be useful for academic essay writing in general. The trainer will demonstrate how teachers can apply these methodologies in their own classrooms and will share some sample resources that can be adapted to suit teachers’ individual requirements. Teachers will have peer discussions during the session and will get a chance to ask questions of the trainer before the end of the webinar.

Deborah Ferris is a distinguished language teacher trainer and has extensive experience training English teachers both locally and overseas. Originally from the UK, she is now based in Sydney and teaches Foundation Studies at a renowned university. In addition, she has experience teaching Freshman English at a top university in Turkey and worked as a teacher trainer with the Turkish Ministry of Education. Furthermore, Deborah has a close relationship with Japanese students and teachers as she was employed by the Tokyo Board of Education as a teacher trainer and visited Japan frequently to personally observe Japanese school teachers in their home classroom environments.
