Important Notice for Non-Residents of Japan taking the IELTS on Paper test
From 1 November 2024, test takers who are non-residents in Japan will not be permitted to sit an IELTS on Paper test. Non-resident IELTS Test Takers can take the IELTS on Computer test instead.
All test takers who do not hold Japanese nationality, and who book an IELTS on Paper test, will be required to provide us with acceptable proof of Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate by email at least 3 days before the scheduled test date. A scanned copy of your Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate is acceptable proof of Japanese residence.
If such test takers do not or are unable to provide acceptable proof of Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate, then we will cancel the booking and refund the test fee. Alternatively, such test takers may choose to take the IELTS on Computer test without a Residence Card or Special Permanent Resident Certificate.
Important:
Any non-residents already registered before 1 November 2024 will be allowed to sit their scheduled IELTS on Paper test without any proof of residency.
A proof of residency cannot be for a period of less than three consecutive months. (A Tourist Visa is not acceptable)
If a test taker is unable to provide an acceptable proof of residence before the stipulated deadline, then their IELTS on Paper test booking will be cancelled.
Once the test centre notifies relevant registered test takers of the requirement for proof, these test takers will have 72 hours to respond by email as required. Failure to respond at all will result in test cancellation and a full refund.
Approved non-Japanese resident test takers for IELTS on Paper will also have to present their residency documents on test day. They have to present the same documents they used for registration, or they will be refused entry to the test.
Test takers may of course choose to take the IELTS on Computer test without any residency requirements.
